The President of India has awarded the most
prestigious award eligible for Civil Police, President’s Gallantry Medal, known
as Police Medal for Gallantry Service to recognise rare bravery of any
individual police officer in the country.
The medal is awarded for his hair-raising
encounter that took place on Tamilnadu- Karnataka border on 1.8.2007, in which
one of the most notorious gangster of Chennai who had sent ripples in the minds
of the law abiding citizens of the state by his notorious activities of
kidnappings, extortions, murders etc. was killed along with one of his
accomplices. After the police chase, he continued his underground activities
from a hide out from Karnataka.
Mr. S.R.Jangid IPS, who was Inspector General
of Police and Additional of Commissioner of Police of Chennai City Police that
time, led a special team, who, by their meticulous planning and adept
execution, were able to track and challenge the gangster finally on 1.8.2007
near Hosur, at Tamilnadu – Karnataka border. A fierce gun battle lasted for
about 45 minutes, in which the said gangster Vellai Ravi and his associate Guna
@ Gunasekaran were killed and remaining culprits numbering at least 5 to 6
escaped taking advantage of the forest cover. Even while escaping they had fired
with high velocity weapons on police party as the fired cartridges were
recovered in a subsequent search of the jungle area.
In the encounter Mr. Jangid fired 6 rounds
from his service pistol and Mr.Thillai Natarajan, Inspector of Police fired 3
rounds in self defence.
Two fire arms were recovered from the possession
of the killed gangsters with some fired and live cartridges.
Both Mr.Jangid and Mr.Thillai Natarajan,
sustained injuries in the gun battle and the both were admitted in the Govt.
Hospital at Hosur and treated as in-patients.
After conclusion of the Magisterial enquiry
and the enquiry by the Human Rights Commission and acceptance of their Reports,
Mr.Jangid IPS, was awarded the Gallantry Medal by the President of India on the
recommendation of the Govt. of Tamilnadu.
In this most prestigious medal, following
fringe benefits, inter alia, are also
conferred –

Free
Railway Journey Pass – Railway Ministry issues a pass for free journey by any
Train of Indian Railways with one companion, any number of times, anywhere in
the country throughout the life time of the recipient and his spouse.
2.
Civil
Aviation Ministry Pass – This pass bestows the benefit of 75% discount on Air
Journey fares in all the domestic Flights of Air India.
3.
Medal
allowance of Rs. 2000/- per month etc.
Mr Jangid has been
responsible for several encounters in and outside Tamil Nadu including the most
famous encounter of two notorious Bawaria criminals in the outskirts of Meerut,
Uttar Pradesh in 02.03.2006 by the team led by Jangid and that of notorious
criminal Punk Kumar in the Suburbs of Chennai on 12.12.2006.
